George Whitman (December 12, 1913 – December 14, 2011), the legendary founder of the Paris bookshop and literary institution Shakespeare & Co., passed away this month. He was 98. Over the years,Whitman sheltered about 50,000 young, struggling writers for free at his legendary Paris bookshop Shakespeare & Co. on the Left Bank. It also was a magnet for writers like Allen Ginsberg, Anais Nin, Lawrence Durrell, Jack Kerouac, Henry Miller…. He was Born on my birthday. 12-12
